Possession shows a moderate positive correlation with both team performance metrics. Teams with higher possession tend to earn more points per game (r = 0.652) and have a better goal difference (r = 0.676). This pattern held across 48 teams analyzed, suggesting that controlling the ball more often is linked to better results, though it's not the only factor driving success.

Spain and Mexico have the strongest goalkeeping in the dataset, both posting a perfect 100% save percentage with 4 clean sheets each. Colombia ranks third with an 80% save rate and 3 clean sheets, followed by Portugal (87.5% save rate, 2 clean sheets) and Brazil (84.6% save rate, 2 clean sheets).

Combining goals per shot with shots-on-target percentage, the Netherlands emerges as the most efficient scoring team, converting 10 goals from just 46 shots (0.220 goals/shot) with 47.8% accuracy. France, Norway, Croatia, and Sweden round out the top five most efficient teams. Interestingly, Japan has the single highest goals-per-shot rate (0.240) and New Zealand has the best shooting accuracy (48.4%), but neither combines both strengths as well as the Netherlands.

No, the data doesn't support that idea. Teams with more yellow cards and red cards show only weak negative correlations with points per game (-0.213 and -0.076), while fouls actually show a weak positive correlation (0.338). When combined into one discipline score, the overall relationship with points per game is weakly positive (r=0.262), meaning teams that commit more fouls and cards don't clearly earn fewer points—if anything, the opposite trend appears, likely because more active or possession-heavy teams commit more fouls while still performing well.

To find the best defensive teams, goals conceded were compared against shots on target faced and tackles won. Spain leads with a stellar record of 0 goals conceded from just 3 shots on target faced, backed by 43 tackles won. Paraguay, Mexico, Egypt, and France round out the top 5, each showing strong ability to limit goals despite facing scoring chances while actively winning tackles.

Team age has almost no relationship with success, but points per game and goals scored are strongly connected. Specifically, average age vs points per game shows a weak negative correlation (-0.091), and average age vs goals is also weakly negative (-0.08). However, points per game and goals scored have a strong positive correlation of 0.794, meaning teams that score more goals tend to earn more points, regardless of how old their squad is. Team ages in the dataset range from 25.7 to 32.2 years. For example, Australia, the youngest team (25.7 years), earned 1.25 points per game with 2 goals, while IR Iran, the oldest team (32.2 years), earned 1.0 points per game with 3 goals — showing age alone doesn't predict performance.

A correlation matrix was built comparing crosses, offsides, fouled, interceptions, and goals to see which attacking/possession metrics relate most to scoring. The heatmap visualization shows the strength and direction of relationships between all five metrics, and a scatter plot highlights the metric most strongly tied to goals, complete with a trend line. Together, these visuals let you quickly spot which behaviors on the pitch tend to move together with scoring output.

Teams were split into three tiers based on goalkeeper save percentage, revealing a strong link between goalkeeping quality and defensive success. Teams in the High save% tier (avg 82.48%) concede only 2.69 goals per game and post a 44.79% clean sheet rate, compared to the Low tier (avg 50.45%) which concedes 7.81 goals per game with just a 7.81% clean sheet rate. Opponent points per game also drops sharply from 1.96 in the Low tier to 0.89 in the High tier, showing that stronger goalkeeping translates directly into fewer points conceded to opponents.

Using z-scores across plus/minus, plus/minus per 90, and goals+assists+pens per 90, 3 out of 48 teams stood out as statistical outliers. France emerged as the top overperformer, while Tunisia and Iraq were identified as underperformers relative to the rest of the dataset.

Teams were ranked by a composite squad rotation score built from players used, substitutions made, and how early subs typically enter the game. Mexico showed the heaviest rotation, while Uruguay rotated the least. When comparing groups, high-rotation teams averaged 1.75 points per game compared to just 0.83 for low-rotation teams, and the overall correlation between rotation score and points per game was 0.529 — a moderately positive relationship. This suggests that teams with deeper squads and more rotation tended to perform better in this tournament, likely because stronger, more successful teams can afford to rest players and rotate their squads more freely.
